About Us

Osteoarthritis affects both men and women

The Regional Joint Assessment Program is a program of excellence that helps adults with hip or knee problems such as pain and difficulty moving and is often associated with osteoarthritis. The Program was developed in 2007 as part of the Ministry of Health's Wait List Strategy to improve access to total joint replacement surgery as well as improving care for managing osteoarthritis.

Our region is reaping the benefits from this new program as is it helping to manage the growing demand for total hip and knee replacements and is helping to reduce wait times for surgery in the Hamilton area.

What is really exciting about the program is that it provides "one stop shopping" for patients. Not only are patients physically assessed, they also receive education on weight management, joint maintenance, referrals for physiotherapy and aquatic programs, education on community resources and services, education on lifestyle changes and x-rays and lab work if needed. Some of these people will require joint replacement surgery and will then go on to see an Orthopaedic surgeon of their choice or a surgeon with the shortest wait list.

If your knee or hip pain is stopping you from doing the activities you enjoy, we can help. Our goal is to work with you so that you can stay active and manage your pain. If you think you need to be seen for a hip or knee problem talk to your doctor. Your doctor can refer you to the program.
